A meme (pronounced /mI:m/) is the smallest unit of cultural evolution. Memes spread and replicate themselves as though they were a lifeform like genes or or a virus. They are contagious and they are communicable by communication between one mind and another.

This performance propagates memes. When put into a cultural context, memes evolve into ideas, thoughts, development, renewal. Or remembrance, doubts, regret. Memes become visions and models. They unite. They divide.

This performance creates meaning from memes. Similar to a machine that is programmed with algorithms and conditions, RESONATOR turns the room into a black box where human beings are brought in direct contact with memes.

The viewer becomes a part of this process. She or he becomes the vehicle transporting memes and resulting ideas out of the Black Box and into the world…

This performance took place in July 1999 in Bonn, Haus der Geschichte. It was an exclusive five-minute piece performed for the award of the KulturPreis Europa 1999, which was awarded to 3sat, a German language satellite TV station available all over Europe.

WELD tells a stream-of-consciousness-story about (pop-)culture and media of the late 20th century.

Using music, melodies, language and soundscapes, loops and clusters, supported by a dense stream of computerprojected images, RESONATOR creates association, the feeling of intense velocity, slowing down, urgency and the subconscious fear of missing the most important things.

The spectators feel like they recognize images from their own memory of dealing with media butareis immediately — through images and sounds — taken away, to another idea, a future memory.

Just like all sorts of media change (and always have changed) the way we look at the world, RESONATOR uses new ways and techniques to tell the story of WELD.

While Anja and canine are shaping the sounds onstage, media artists Torsten Meyer-Bautor and Susanne Esders create a live video show of images as an underscore to the music.

Two minutes of silence followed the june 1999 performance of NAKRA, a piece with a strong political overtone: the situation of Kosovo. “You can’t just applaud to this. But it was still great, though.” a stunned member of the audience finally called across the room.

The 14 minute RESONATOR track is built around samples describing the unfolding of events in Kosovo during the first half of 1999.

NAKRA did not try to explain, or take a bias toward any particular side in this war. Nakra merely tells the story of the facts as they were perceived through (western) media.

NAKRA was illustrated by a video/computer animation “Ein Schlag Worte” by Frankfurt/Berlin based multimedia artists and typographers Face2Face (F2F).

The show took place at 01.00 am at “Spatium”, the 16th Forum for Typography in Leipzig at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst.

Energija is an hommage to the power of electric energy as well as to the cultural and historical events it has made possible.

A man, veteran of the WWII tells his story, a church organ plays, slamming train doors, passing cars and busses, sidewalk musicians entertaining passersby. Churchbells, the sound of rain and all of this combined with slamming beats, slurping synths and booming samplers — Energija is a dense and complex story about the city of Münster. It is also a present given to the Stadtwerke Münster, the local energy company for the opening of their new central office and headquarters.

RESONATOR teamed up with the visual talent of Face2Face from Frankfurt/Berlin to tell a tale of energy.

Armed with nothing but the equipment that easily fits into a messenger-sized backpack, RESONATOR set out to prove that “nomadic devices” — an Apple PowerBook, a small synth, a small drummachine and some other things that are basically pocket gear — are very very useful when it comes to playing and performing music.

nomad basic was a series of 5 shows, untdertaken in and during the exhibition bøsen sell (http://www.waf80.de/boesensell). Each was about 60 minutes long and they all consisted of roughly ten to 15 parts/tracks each.

In the case of nomad basic, nothing was rehearsed, nobody knew before the show what it would turn into.

The results were online in the past and may be again. Bear with us for the time being…

Resonator premiers the soundtrack for the 1921 silent movie by F.W. Murnau with six shows on consecutive days.

Thoughts of the machine
For this 60 minute piece, performed for the first and presumably only time on July 4th 1997, Resonator built a machine then became part of that machine.

Wewerka Pavillon, a 20m x 10m structure of glass and steel became the main hull and stage for the machine. RESONATOR was on the inside, the audience was out in the dark. The glass walls were pitch black and only moving lights, the music and computer animated images emanated from within.

It was only after a wait of some 15 minutes that from the inside layouts of cicuit boards were etched into the black on the inside of the glass.

Dr. Martin Henatsch of the Academy of Fine Arts in Münster wrote about the show:

“It was not the thoughts of the machine which made this an unforgettable night. Not the fast euphoria for technology by an unyielding media art put this performance into its place.

Wewerka Pavillon was not misunderstood as a futuristic “temple of media”. Instead it once more provided the human actors with a space for experiments. They used their high tech gear with determination but not without irony and self mocking.

In spite of their tangible enthusiasm, Kreysing, Niggemann and Vollenbroich always kept the machines under their control and used them towards their artistic goal and intention.

The fragile and archaic human drawing, the accordeon’s soothing folklore together with the intuitive and spontanous composition of sounds became the counterpart to computer, RoboScan and videoprojector. At the end of this metamorphosis it was not the machine which was at the center of attention, this tale was not dominated by the thoughts of the machine, but by projections of mankind itself.”

RESONATOR teamed up with Dirk Vollenbroich and his crew for Gedanken der Maschine. This show also marked the debut of Susanne Esders’ work for RESONATOR visuals.
